One of the traditional names for the round core of the macadamia nut is Kindal Kindal. According to an Aboriginal legend, the nut was discovered by chance by a young boy who moved out to protect the land of his ancestors.
A fall in impassable terrain threatened to end his journey prematurely, but the animals helped him back on his feet – including a cockatoo that provided food by carrying the nuts of the macadamia tree. Since then, the Aborigines have appreciated the wild nuts as a rich source of food.
